As a young man, after being harassed by police because of his skin color, Erroll Southers looked to his father for advice. “You can’t change the castle from outside the moat,” he said. What followed was a life of public service and an unshakeable conviction to lead change from inside the castle walls.
This one-of-a-kind memoir reveals a complex man’s journey across a daring career in espionage, counterterrorism and law enforcement. As a former FBI special agent, assistant chief of police, presidential nominee and counterterrorism expert, Erroll Southers escorts readers behind closed doors and recounts the high-stakes operations and difficult realities of protecting a nation in an era of global threats.
The book is also a personal, revealing journey through the social, racial and political forces shaping the United States. Southers revisits sacrifices and ethical dilemmas of a life lived on the front lines, not only as a law enforcement professional but as a Black man navigating America's most powerful institutions.
With untold stories about some of the best known public figures, Inside the Castle Walls provides a rare glimpse of a world few people are permitted to see.
